Hong Kong Museum of History

History and culture in one place

For today’s article about culture and art, we are going to talk about the Hong Kong Museum of History. First established in July 1975, when the City Museum and Art Gallery was split into the Hong Kong Museum of History and Hong Kong Museum of Art, it has proved it’s possible to squeeze 400 million years of history into one 7,000 square metre space.

But, some of the Museum’s collections date back to the City Museum and Art Gallery founded in 1962 at the City Hall. In 1983, the Museum moved to the temporary accommodation in The Hong Kong Museum of History. Then, it moved to its present premises on Chatham Road South, Tsim Sha Tsui in 1998. The place is a list-topper for people passionate about history. This museum has made enormous efforts in studying, collecting, processing and exhibiting countless objects which are related to the archaeology, history, ethnography and natural histories of Hong Kong and South China. Thematic exhibitions appear regularly at different times.

Hong Kong Museum of History is probably the most interesting museum in Hong Kong and if you plan to visit Hong Kong’s cultural spots, it should be the first in your list.

It currently occupies a state-of-the-art building, with an area of 17,500 square meters. Furthermore, the Science Museum is right next to it. These two form a museum complex that has a unique harmonious appearance. The place dons very appealing and magnificent colours. Honoring arts and culture at the same time. As many of Hong Kong’s museums, Museum of History is managed by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Founded to preserve the historical and cultural heritage of China, the museum continually adds to its collection. Virtually all new items are related to the history of Hong Kong and the territories of South China. Currently, its collection counts over 90,000 historical objects and materials. In the museum, guests will find the unique collection of natural history, exclusive historical developments and historical materials. But also a wide range of Hong Kong’s archaeological objects.

Also, it’s one of the best historical resources that displays models of town and village architecture. Visitors get a chance to see early newspapers, a complete set of Hong Kong currencies, documents and a huge collection of historical photographs. In addition, you can learn a lot of things about the city. Last but no least! There are many beautiful items that the people of Hong Kong used in the past.
