After a few years in America, Domenico Giacoppo decided to Americanize the name in Jacobs, to make it easier to pronounce in the states. In addition, in the early 1900s, there was still racism against Italians who came from the poorest areas of the Italian peninsula, such as Sicily, Calabria, Puglia and Campania. For this reason, the Italian surname was changed to Jacobs.

The grandfather of the first lady to be precise embarked on May 19, 1900, on the ship “Patria” departing from Naples.
