Ornella Vanoni the Italian Barbra Streisand

A great Italian singer

Ornella Vanoni the Italian Barbra Streisand was born in Milan in 1934 and is undoubtedly the most long-lived singer in Italy. Still able to fill theatres. Her beautiful voice has an unmistakable tone, which all Italians are used to hear ringing since 1956. At the beginning of her career, she also been an actress.  She had a relationship with the director Giorgio Strehler, who launched her on stage. Then by a quick love story with Gino Paoli, another great Italian singer.

She liked to cultivate a certain air of intellectuality and a singer. But she had always claimed to be a girl of simple tastes. Her dream was to become a beautician. Then she changed her image into a girl of the crime world. Producing many lyrics that exploited the poetic vein of the old Milanese underworld.

Instead of marrying Gino Paoli, she married the impresario and former singer Lucio Ardenzi, a big mistake. She had a son from him and then did separated.  She started making films as well as continuing his career as a singer.

Her song, “Senza Fine” became a worldwide success after it entered the soundtrack of Robert Aldrich’s film “The Flight of the Phoenix.” Interpreted by the sugar-doll Connie Francis. She found herself in direct competition with a singer like Barbra Streisand.

Her success

In 1987 she recorded in London the album “O” (produced by Greg Walsh and Ivano Fossati). Which started a tour of high-level concerts, which are also the first on their own, since 1982. For this tour, Ornella chooses new musicians, adding refined pieces to her old repertoire. For the stage, she employed her friends Arnaldo Pomodoro and Gian Ruggero Manzoni.  The costumes were by Gianni Versace. Who, for that occasion, created a tight black sheath dress with colorful and interchangeable accessories.

Her successes are many, as her vitality. You can still see her on television as a judge of singing competitions. Always witty and able to amaze their audience with her releases. For example, a few months ago, she took part in the second edition of the program “Ora o mai più” (Now or never again). Hosted by the presenter Amadeus on Rai 1, as Coach of the singer Paolo Vallesi. As if that weren’t enough, since September 2019, she judged the first edition of “Amici Celebri” conducted first by Maria De Filippi.

For sure at the age of 100 we will find her on the stage!
