The Mandolin a very Italian instrument

The magic instrument

The Mandolin is the quintessential Italian musical instrument. It also used to define certain Italian characteristics in a mildly derogative way, (they are all mandolinari!). Meaning too comfortable and relaxed, enjoying life without worrying too much about things.

The name Mandolin stands for small almond (mandola). It is a stringed musical instrument in the lute family. It commonly has four courses of doubled metal strings tuned in unison. This instrument is very well known and come in several shapes with different musical effects.

The modern Mandolin plays like a pizzicato violin. It has the same tuning, so it allows you to play the violin repertoire very quickly. And this technique is the tremolo. The Mandolin produces a sound that penetrates our soul. And reaches deep into our hearts ̶ so we are experiencing high emotions. The Mandolin is the symbol of Italy and an ambassador for Italian music around the world. With an Italian touch, which is very trendy lately. Together with Italian food and fashion, Italian music (including the sounds created by the Mandolin), are powerful ways to bring our message to the world.

Captain Corelli's Mandolin

It is an extremely versatile instrument, originating during the Renaissance. And then it spread during the XIX century all over the world. Taking different forms and variations, we have musical scores written by classic authors for the Mandolin.

The book Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, issued in 1994, was an enormous bestseller all over the world. And later they shoot a movie based on it. British Author Louis De Bernieres wrote it. It was about an Italian officer in the Italian army during WWII on the Greek island of Kefalonia. Captain Corelli, before the war, was a professional Mandolin player. In 1943 the Italian army refused to surrender and tried to resist a superior German army. And there was a massacre of Italian officers and soldiers.
